Sergeant for safety of shop released prisoner and sustained
a severe wound on his head and several bruises on body
(not serious). Two of the shop coolies were injured and
removed to Hospital. Damage to shop estimated at $800 (shop cases, bird cages, gas lamp and loss of birds). The
Police turned out from Central but made no arrest.
Report in C.S.0. 9 in 6011/11:
On evening of 16th. a Chinese woman had some jewellery
snatched from her in front of the Fire Brigade Station. The culprit ran away but was caught by another China- -man. A crowd immediately attacked him.
P.C. 3,, Attewell, who was off duty saw the snatcher arrested
He went to the assistance of the Chinaman who made the
arrest, secured the culprit and took him to Central
Station followed by a large crowd which stoned him. He
kept his prisoner but had to check the crowd by firing
his revolver in the air. The prisoner had to be dis-
<charged next day because the woman could not identify him. The man who originally made the arrest failed to
appear.
P.M.R. 24th. November:
L.S. 2, Grant reports that about 5.15 p.m. on 23rd. instant
he engaged a street coolie to carry a hawker's stall to
the Station. The hawker ran away to avoid arrest and
while in Connaught Road West near Eastern Street a crow of people mobbed him (the Sergeant). He arrested a man for disorderly conduct, a crowd commenced throwing
stones at him. Police from No. 7 Station turned out
and assisted L.S. Grant to take his prisoner to
Station. Before reaching the station the crowd dis-
-persed.
Note:-
On enquiry The Captain Superintendent of Police
found that L.S.Grant exceeded his duty. He ordered the
man to take the stall to the Station which the man
